Solar is two trades. We are the second one.

Most people picture a solar job as panels going on the roof. That part is the solar installer. The other half is electrical, and it is where jobs stall. Somebody has to land the array into your service panel: pick the tie-in method, set the backfeed breaker or the tap, mount a lockable AC disconnect, label everything the way an inspector and the utility both want to see it, and make sure the panel can legally carry what is being pushed into it. That is our half, and we do it on Pearl City homes every month.

We work with whatever equipment you already have. Sometimes a homeowner books us with a PV company already lined up and we take the electrical scope. Sometimes an array has been sitting on a roof for six weeks not producing a watt because the panel would not accept the breaker as wired. Sometimes it is an older system that needs re-tying after a service upgrade, or a battery getting added to a five-year-old array. All of those are the same conversation: what can your panel take, what does it need, and what will it cost. You get that answer as a written quote with the options laid out, not a shrug on the driveway.

Pearl City housing stock is the reason this comes up so often here. A lot of the neighborhoods off Kamehameha Highway and up the slope toward Waimalu and Momilani were built when 100 amps was plenty of service for a family house. Those panels are full, they are old, and their busbars were never rated for someone backfeeding solar into them decades later. Add the central Oahu reality that most of these homes now also run split ACs and at least one car that wants charging, and the original service is doing work it was never sized for. Solar is usually the moment that catches up with a homeowner.

None of that means you cannot go solar. It means the electrical has to get sorted first, and it is far cheaper to know that before the panels are ordered than after they are hanging. Questions We Get In Pearl City

What is the 120 percent rule, in plain words?
The metal bar inside your panel that all the breakers clip onto has a rating, usually 100, 125, or 200 amps. Power comes in through the main breaker and solar pushes in from the other end. Code lets the two of them together add up to 120 percent of that bar’s rating, and no more. So a 100 amp bar with a 100 amp main has only 20 amps of room left, which is not much solar. That one number decides most of what happens next on your job.
My panel does not have room. Now what?
Three normal paths. Swap the main breaker for a smaller one, which frees up room on the bar as long as your household load supports it. Tap ahead of the main instead, so the solar never touches the bar at all. Or upgrade the service and panel, which is the right call when the panel is old, full, or already struggling. We price whichever ones apply to your house and tell you which we would pick and why.
Do you install the solar panels as well?
No. The array, the racking, and the inverters are the solar installer’s scope. We are the licensed electricians who make the connection to your house right: the tie-in, the disconnect, the panel work, the labeling, and the permit. Plenty of homeowners hire us directly alongside their PV company, and plenty of PV companies call us for the electrical when a panel turns out to need work.
My system is installed but still not turned on. Can you fix that?
That is one of our most common calls, and it is usually one of three things. The busbar will not legally take the backfeed as it was wired. The disconnect or the labeling is missing or wrong. Or the paperwork filed with the utility does not describe what actually got built. We look at the panel and the tie-in, correct the electrical, and get the permit and interconnection documents lined up with reality so it can be cleared.
I want batteries eventually. Should I do anything now?
Yes, and it costs very little while the panel is already open. Storage needs its own tie-in and, if you want the lights on during an outage, a small sub-panel carrying the circuits that matter: fridge, a few lights, the router, maybe a fan. Leaving space and a path for that now means adding batteries later is a day of work instead of tearing the whole thing apart. Tell us it is coming and we will build for it.
We are adding an EV charger too. Same trip?
Makes sense to do both at once. A charger and a solar tie-in are pulling on the same panel capacity, so sizing them together avoids paying twice for panel work. How long does the electrical side take?
The wiring itself is usually a day, sometimes two if the panel is being replaced at the same time. The longer part is outside our hands: permit turnaround and the utility’s interconnection review. What we control is that nothing gets kicked back for our work. Clean install, correct labels, documents matching the build. That is what keeps the calendar moving.
