Power Where You Need It
Adding a circuit is not a small job done sloppily. Run the wrong gauge wire, skip the AFCI breaker, or tie into an already-loaded panel, and you get nuisance trips at best and a fire hazard at worst. When you want power somewhere it does not exist yet, the right way is to size the load, run the proper conductor, and protect it at the panel. That is the whole job.

We pull the City and County of Honolulu permit, coordinate with HECO when a temporary disconnect is needed, and label every breaker so nobody is guessing later.
We run modern THHN/THWN copper and Romex where it belongs, sized to the load and the breaker. No tying a 20-amp run onto a 15-amp circuit, no piggybacking off the nearest box because it is closer. If we would not wire it that way in our own home, it does not go in yours.
Here is what actually happens on a wiring job, because most people have never watched one. First we open the panel and read what is already there: how many spaces are free, what the main is rated for, and how much of that capacity the house is already using on a hot afternoon with the AC running. Then we figure the route. Wire has to get from the panel to wherever you want the power, and on Oahu the route is the part that decides how long the job takes. After that comes the pull, the terminations at both ends, the breaker, and the test. Nothing exotic. It is just that every one of those steps has a right way and a fast way, and the fast way is what we get called out to fix later.
The route matters more here than it does on the mainland because of how these houses are built. A lot of the older Honolulu and Aiea housing stock is single-wall construction: vertical boards making up the wall with no stud cavity behind them and no insulation to fish through. There is nowhere to hide a wire inside that wall. On those homes we usually run surface conduit, go up into the attic and drop down, or come in under the house, and we talk that through with you before we start so you know what the finished job will look like. Post-1970s drywall-and-stud homes are the opposite problem: plenty of cavity to fish, but you cannot see what is in there until you open it up. Both are workable. They are just different jobs, and quoting them the same way is how a contractor ends up asking for more money halfway through.
Salt air is the other thing that separates island wiring from anywhere else. If you live in Kailua or anywhere the trade winds carry spray inland, the humidity and the salt work on every metal part in the system. Box screws corrode. Terminal screws lose their bite. Old rubber and cloth insulation dries out and goes brittle years faster than the same wire would in a dry climate. We have opened boxes in windward homes where the conductor looked fine but the insulation crumbled the moment it was flexed. That is why we use corrosion-resistant hardware where it counts, seal exterior penetrations properly, and check the condition of what is already in the box before we tie anything new onto it.
Code has moved a long way since most of these homes were built. A house wired in the 1960s was legal then with two-prong ungrounded outlets, a 60-amp service, no GFCI anywhere, and no arc-fault protection at all. Every one of those things has changed. Kitchens and baths need ground-fault protection now. Bedrooms need arc-fault. Kitchen counters need their own small-appliance circuits. Bathrooms need a dedicated 20-amp. None of that means your old wiring is illegal where it sits, since existing work is generally allowed to stay. It does mean anything new we add has to meet today’s rules, and the inspector will look at it that way too.
When we quote, we quote the whole thing: the run, the terminations, the breaker, the permit, and the patching we expect to leave behind. Jerry finished his apprenticeship in 1990 and worked union until 2019 before opening this shop with his sons, and the one thing he will not do is hand you a low number and come back with an invoice that does not match it. If we find something inside the wall that changes the job, you hear about it while we are standing there, before we keep going.
