Electrical Panel Upgrades in Kaneohe

Kaneohe houses often run on 60A or 100A panels that cannot carry a modern household. Common triggers: the homeowner just bought a Level 2 EV charger and discovered the existing service is full; the home is being sold and the inspector flagged a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel; the breakers visibly arc when reset; or windward humidity and salt mist drifting in from Kaneohe Bay have eaten the panel bus bars and grounding electrode.

Kaneohe homes have their own quirks. Older Heeia and Ahuimanu hillside homes sit above the bay with long exterior service masts that take the brunt of windward weather. Halekou and Mahinui have a lot of post-and-pier construction where the panel sits in a damp crawlspace and corrodes faster than an interior install. Pikoiloa and the Kahaluu corridor have heavy military-family rental turnover; landlords often upgrade panels between tenants so the next tenant can run AC and a dryer without daily trips.

A standard Kaneohe 200A upgrade includes new main breaker, copper bus bars, AFCI/GFCI breakers per NEC 2017 with Hawaii amendments, tamper-resistant receptacles where needed, fresh grounding electrodes, and meter base or weatherhead replacement on the service mast if those have aged out.

The long exterior service mast on the hillside Heeia and Ahuimanu homes is the part that takes the real beating up here. It stands out in the wind and rain above the bay for decades, and by the time a panel needs upgrading the mast, the weatherhead, and the meter can are often corroded right along with it. We check the whole service entrance at the assessment, not just the panel, because swapping a fresh 200A panel onto a rotted mast just moves the problem. If the mast has aged out, you hear that with the panel quote instead of as a change order on install day.

Post-and-pier construction in Halekou and Mahinui puts a lot of Kaneohe panels in a damp crawlspace, and damp is hard on a panel. The bus bars and breaker connections corrode faster in a humid under-house space than they would on an interior wall, and the grounding electrode down there rots at the clamp. When we upgrade a crawlspace panel we drive fresh grounding electrodes, re-bond the metallic piping still in service, and where it makes sense we talk with you about relocating the panel to a drier interior or garage wall so the next one lasts longer.
