Electrical Panel Replacement on Oahu

Some panels need to go because they are too small for modern loads. That is a panel upgrade, and it is about capacity. Other panels need to go because the equipment itself is unreliable. That is a replacement, and it is about safety. The most common offenders we still find in older Oahu homes are Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels, both of which have well-documented failure modes tied to house fires.

Sparky and Sons replaces these, along with other failing panels, as a same-amperage swap when the existing service is sized correctly, or as a combined replacement and upsize when it is not. Either way, we coordinate the HECO disconnect, swap the equipment, and bring the whole install up to current code while the wall is open.

There is a third category we deal with a lot here that has nothing to do with brand: corrosion. A panel mounted on an exterior wall a few blocks from the water in Aiea or on the windward side takes salt air every day of its life. What we find when we pull the cover is white powder on the bus, green on the neutral bar, and breaker clips that have lost their grip on the bus stab. A loose connection heats up, and heat makes the connection looser, and that cycle ends badly. Corrosion of that kind is not something you clean and reuse. The panel gets replaced.

Heat damage is its own tell. If you pull a cover and see browned insulation, a breaker that will not stay seated, a burned or pitted spot on the bus bar, or you get a smell like hot plastic near the panel, that is arcing and it is not a wait-and-see item. Same with a breaker that trips repeatedly with nothing unusual plugged in, or one that has stopped tripping at all even when it should. Old breakers wear out mechanically, and a breaker that no longer trips is worse than no breaker.

The inspection itself is straightforward and does not cost you anything. We shut off the main, pull the dead front, and look at the bus condition, the breaker brand and fit, the neutral and ground terminations, the conductor insulation, whether anything has been double-tapped onto a single lug, and whether the panel is even the right one for its location. We photograph what we find and go over it with you at the panel so you can see the same thing we are seeing. Then you decide.

People ask us to be blunt about whether they really need this, and we are. Plenty of forty-year-old panels are perfectly serviceable. An old Square D or Cutler-Hammer with a clean bus and breakers that still snap in tight can keep working for years, and we will tell you to leave it alone and spend the money somewhere else in the house. Jerry has been doing this since 1990 and has no interest in scaring anybody into work they do not need. But when the panel is an FPE Stab-Lok, a Zinsco, or a corroded mess, we say that just as plainly.

If you do not know what brand you have, that is normal. Most people have never opened the door. We will tell you on a walk-through and let you know whether it is a known problem panel or just an old-but-fine one, no charge and no pressure either way.
