Why might my panel need a derate or upgrade for solar?
The NEC 120 percent rule limits how much backfeed a busbar can take based on its rating and the main breaker. Many older Kailua 100 and 125 amp panels cannot legally accept a solar breaker as-is. The fix is a main breaker derate, a line-side tap ahead of the main, or a service and panel upgrade. We do the math first and tell you which one your panel actually needs.
Line-side tap or load-side breaker, which do I need?
It depends on your busbar rating, main breaker size, and system size. A load-side breaker is simplest when the panel has headroom. Can you re-tie my system after a panel upgrade, or add a battery later?
Yes. Re-tying an existing array onto a new panel and adding a battery or EV charger to an existing solar system are both common. We make sure the new combined load and backfeed still satisfy the busbar rule and that the disconnect and labeling are updated so the whole system stays compliant, not just the new part.
I want battery backup for windward outages. Does that change the interconnect?
Yes. Adding storage changes the load and backfeed math, and to actually keep your lights on during a Koolau-squall outage the battery usually needs a protected-loads sub-panel feeding the circuits that matter, like the refrigerator, some lighting, and the internet.
