Pearl City has a lot of housing stock that predates the way people actually live now. Receptacles fail here for a reason that has nothing to do with how much you plug into them. Pearl City sits close enough to the harbor that the air carries salt and moisture year round, and the neighborhoods down in Waiau and Manana get more of it than the ridge. That air works its way into wall boxes through gaps around the plate and settles on the brass contacts inside the device. Corroded contacts grip a plug loosely, and a loose grip means resistance, and resistance means heat. That is why a plug that falls halfway out of the wall on its own is not a cosmetic annoyance, it is the early stage of a warm receptacle. If a cord feels hot at the plug or you can smell anything faintly plastic near an outlet, stop using it and call somebody.
Backstabbing is the other failure we find constantly, and it deserves plain talk. Most receptacles sold today have small holes in the back where a stripped wire can be pushed straight in, held by a little spring clip. It is fast, it is technically permitted, and it is a bad idea. That clip contacts a thin sliver of the conductor, and every heating and cooling cycle over decades works it looser until the connection arcs behind a wall you cannot inspect. A screw terminal wraps the conductor around a solid brass post and clamps it down with real pressure. It takes us maybe thirty extra seconds per device. We do it on every outlet we install, including the ones nobody will ever see behind a dresser.
