Fleet or Customer

Two Different Projects.

Fleet charging is the easier of the two, once you accept the one constraint that matters: the vehicles are parked in the same spot every night for eight or ten hours. That is a lot of time to move energy, which means you can charge a whole yard of vans at a modest power level per vehicle and stagger them so they never all pull at once. Fleet operators who insist on the fastest chargers available usually end up paying for capacity that sits idle every night.

Customer-facing stalls work the opposite way. Someone eating lunch in Kailua town or shopping at Pearlridge is on your property for an hour, maybe two. The charge they get in that window is the whole value of the amenity, so power level matters and so does reliability. A stall that is broken or occupied by a car that finished charging three hours ago is worse than no stall, because now the customer is annoyed at you specifically. That is where session limits, idle fees, and clear signage earn their keep.

Hotels sit in between and often need both. Guest stalls that fill overnight behave like fleet charging. The stalls near the porte cochere that valet uses for turnover behave like retail. We lay those out as separate groups so the two uses do not fight each other for the same power.

We Meter First

Before anything is quoted we log what the building actually draws through a normal week, including the summer afternoon peak when the air conditioning is working hardest. Nameplate math on paper always overstates it, and that overstatement is what pushes owners into service upgrades they did not need.

Networked chargers can be grouped so the whole bank stays under one ceiling. Six stalls with two cars plugged in give those two cars everything available. Fill all six and the system divides the power instead of tripping the main.

Shifting fleet charging to the middle of the night keeps it away from your building peak entirely. On some properties that scheduling alone is the difference between adding stalls now and waiting on a service upgrade.

Condos And Managed Property

Getting It Past the Board.

On a condo or an AOAO-governed property, the electrical work is often the simple part. The hard part is the questions the board will ask, and they are fair questions. Whose power is this coming off? How does an owner get billed for what they use? Who owns the equipment, the association or the resident? What happens when the next four owners want stalls, and does the first installation make that easier or block it?

We have sat through those meetings. What helps is walking in with drawings that show where the feed originates, which panel it lands on, how metering separates the charging load from house power, and what the expansion path looks like. Boards approve projects they understand and table projects they do not.

Property managers running commercial buildings deal with a shorter version of the same conversation, usually about cost allocation between tenants and whether stalls are assigned or shared. We will build the layout either way, and we will tell you honestly which arrangement causes fewer complaints six months later. Assigned stalls are cleaner on paper. Shared stalls with session limits serve more people per dollar spent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add charging without upgrading my service?
More often than owners expect. Load sharing across stalls lets you fit real charging capability inside the capacity you already have. We meter the building to confirm it before anyone spends money on a service upgrade.
What network should I use?
Depends what you need from it. ChargePoint and Wallbox have solid commercial admin portals for billing and access control. Tesla makes sense when your drivers skew that direction. If nobody is getting billed, a simpler setup will save you a monthly subscription.
How long does a commercial install take?
A single stall near the panel is usually 1 to 2 days. Multi-stall banks with trenching and conduit across a lot run 3 to 7 days, longer if the run crosses paving that has to be cut and patched.
Are there current rebates available?
HECO and federal charging incentives exist and the terms move around from year to year. We check what is active when you are ready and file the application with you.
Who maintains the chargers once they are in?
You own them, and we service them. Most issues are connectors damaged by drivers, a tripped breaker, or a unit that has fallen off the network. We keep those on the same maintenance visits as the rest of your electrical.
Can I charge users for the power?
Yes, if the charger is networked and set up for it. Payment can run through the manufacturer’s app, a card reader, or a validation code for customers and guests. We configure the billing side during commissioning so it works before the stalls open.
