A Level 2 charger is really just a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the charger and the car. Most home units run at 32, 40, or 48 amps, and the circuit behind them has to be sized one step above that continuous draw, which means a 40-amp charger wants a 50-amp breaker and the wire to match. That is the number that trips people up: a charger is a continuous load, so the circuit is not sized to what it pulls, it is sized to what it pulls for hours on end. We size the run correctly the first time so you are never nursing a hot breaker or a charger that throttles itself because the wire is undersized.
Panel room is the other half. A lot of Aiea homes still run 100-amp service, and once the AC, the water heater, the range, and the dryer are accounted for, there may not be enough headroom left for a 40 or 48-amp charging circuit. A proper load calculation tells us whether a dedicated circuit fits, whether a smart charger that throttles to available capacity is the smarter move, or whether the panel needs an upgrade first. A hardwired charger is cleaner, can run at higher amperage, and is the right call for an outdoor or carport mount exposed to Aiea rain and salt air. A 14-50 outlet lets you unplug and take the charger with you, which some people want, but the outlet itself has to be a quality unit because a cheap receptacle is the most common failure point on a home charger.
