Your home’s wiring is the nervous system behind every light switch, outlet, and appliance. When it is 30-plus years old (common in Aiea and central Honolulu) or nicked from a prior remodel, you start seeing the signs: flickering lights, warm outlets, breakers that trip for no reason, or appliances that feel underpowered. None of that is normal, and most of it is fixable.

We replace old runs with modern THHN/THWN copper and Romex where it belongs, and we add AFCI/GFCI breakers wherever code requires. No knob-and-tube left live, no aluminum branch wiring left in place, and no “we’ll just splice this” shortcuts. If we would not put it in our own home, it does not go in yours.
Two eras of wiring account for most of the rewires we do on this island. The first is aluminum branch wiring, which went into an enormous number of houses built or added onto between the mid 1960s and the mid 1970s when copper prices spiked. Aluminum itself is not the problem. The problem is what happens where it terminates. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as a circuit heats and cools, so over decades the conductor works itself loose under the screw. It also oxidizes, and aluminum oxide does not conduct well, so the connection heats up, which loosens it further. That is the loop. If your house is from that window and nobody has ever touched the outlets, the terminations are the thing to look at, not the wire in the wall.
The second era is older: cloth-insulated wiring in pre-war Honolulu homes, and the knob-and-tube that came with it. That wire was well made for its day, but the insulation was rubber wrapped in cloth, and rubber does not survive eighty years of island humidity. It goes hard, then it cracks, then it flakes off in the box the first time somebody flexes the conductor. We open a lot of ceiling boxes in older Kalihi, Palama, and Manoa homes and find bare copper sitting inside a fixture canopy. There is no repair for that condition. Once the insulation is gone the run gets replaced, and typically its neighbors do too, because wire that old rarely fails in just one place.
People always want to know what a rewire actually looks like day to day, so here is the honest version. We work in zones, usually two or three rooms at a time, because that keeps most of the house powered while we are in one part of it. Day one is normally the panel and the service side plus the first zone. From there we move room by room: kill the circuits feeding that zone, open the boxes, pull the new home runs, set the boxes and devices, and land everything at the panel before we move on. A typical three-bedroom finishes in four to seven working days. Bigger homes, split levels, and anything with a finished attic or a lot of tile take longer, and we tell you which one yours is when we walk it, not after we have started.
Most families stay in the house the whole time, and that is the plan we build around. You will lose power in the zone we are working, usually for the working day, and you will have it back in that zone by the time we leave. The kitchen and the refrigerator get scheduled deliberately so you are not without them overnight. There is dust, though less than people expect since most of what we open are small fishing holes rather than whole walls, and we put drop cloths down and wear shoe covers because we are in your living room, not on a job site. If you have small kids, pets, or somebody working from home, tell us at the walkthrough and we will sequence the zones around it.
Permits and inspection run alongside all of it. A rewire is permitted work through the City and County of Honolulu, and we pull it in our name rather than asking you to sign as an owner-builder. There is usually a rough inspection while the boxes are still open and the wire is visible, then a final once the devices and cover plates are on. If the service itself is being upgraded or the meter has to come off, HECO gets scheduled for the disconnect and reconnect, and that date drives the calendar more than our own crew does. When it passes, you get a copy of the sign-off. That paperwork matters at resale and it matters to your insurance carrier, which is the main reason unpermitted rewires cost people money later.
