Kaneohe homes across Heeia, Ahuimanu, Pikoiloa, and Kahaluu run the same lighting request through our shop regularly: homeowners remodeling a kitchen or bathroom want to pull out the old surface-mount fixtures and add recessed LED cans. It’s a straightforward job when there’s attic access above the ceiling and wiring runs are short. It gets more involved in single-story concrete block construction common on windward Oahu, where fishing new circuits through solid walls requires careful routing and sometimes a crawl path through the soffit.

Outdoor lighting on windward Oahu requires a different spec than mainland installs. Salt mist from Kaneohe Bay, high rainfall, and UV exposure eat standard fixtures faster than they should. We use fixtures rated for damp and wet locations with stainless hardware where the connection points are exposed. Landscape path lighting buried in soil near the bay should run low-voltage LED with a transformer protected from moisture; direct-burial wire needs a proper trench depth and conduit sleeve at any penetration point.

Interior upgrades often expose wiring surprises in older Kaneohe homes. Opening a ceiling box to add a can frequently reveals aluminum branch wiring, undersized wire for the new load, or knob-and-tube sections that predate the 1960s. We assess and quote any additional scope before proceeding, no surprise charges at the end of the job.

Layout is where a recessed lighting job is won or lost, and it is worth doing right before a single hole gets cut. Spacing the cans too far apart leaves dark pockets, too close together looks like a runway, and putting them in the wrong place leaves a shadow right over the kitchen counter or the bathroom mirror where you actually need the light. We mark the layout on the ceiling first, based on the room’s size, the ceiling height, and how you use the space, and we walk it with you before we cut. Getting the plan right up front is a lot cheaper than patching a can hole that ended up in the wrong spot.

The other thing we sort out before ordering fixtures is the color temperature and the dimming, because the wrong choice makes a nice remodel feel off. Kitchens and work areas usually want a cooler, brighter light in the neighborhood of 3000 to 3500 kelvin, while living rooms and bedrooms feel better warmer, around 2700. We match the LED color across a room so you do not end up with one can looking blue next to another looking yellow, and we pair the fixtures with a dimmer rated for that specific LED load so they dim smoothly instead of flickering or buzzing at low brightness.
