Kaneohe and the windward side of Oahu lose power at a higher rate than most of urban Honolulu. Windward distribution lines run through terrain that catches weather differently than the leeward side, the Ko’olau ridge creates its own weather patterns, and the lines serving Kaneohe, Kailua, and Heeia cross areas that see more tree contact, wind damage, and occasional flooding events than the protected urban grid. HECO restores windward outages reasonably fast for most events, but multi-hour and multi-day outages after major weather are not rare experiences for windward homeowners.
The generator conversation usually starts after the second or third significant outage. This post covers how to think about backup power sizing, and why the component most people overlook, the transfer switch, is the part that determines whether your setup is safe, legal, and actually useful.
The Generator Is Not the Hard Part
Portable generators are widely available at Costco, Home Depot, and hardware stores across Oahu. A 5,000-7,500 watt portable generator will run a refrigerator, lights, fans, phone charging, a window AC unit, and a well pump. That covers the basics for most Kaneohe households during a windward outage. The generator purchase is the easy decision.
The transfer switch is where homeowners get stuck, and skipping it creates real risk.
What a Transfer Switch Actually Does
When HECO power is out and your generator is running, the generator needs to power your home’s circuits. The way homeowners try to connect a portable generator without a transfer switch is often a “suicide cord”, a double male plug that feeds the generator into a dryer outlet or another large outlet, energizing the panel from the generator side. This is illegal, dangerous for HECO line workers who assume the lines are dead, and can damage the generator when HECO power returns.
A transfer switch, whether a manual or automatic type, solves this by creating a physical disconnect from the utility before generator power enters the panel. There is no path for generator power to backfeed the HECO lines, no possibility of both power sources being connected simultaneously, and no code violation.
Manual Transfer Switch
A manual transfer switch is a small sub-panel installed next to the main panel. It contains 6-10 pre-selected circuit breakers for the loads you want to run on generator power: refrigerator, kitchen outlets, well pump, select lighting circuits, and possibly a bedroom window AC. When the power goes out, you start the generator, run the generator cord to an inlet box on the exterior of the house, then flip the transfer switch from UTILITY to GENERATOR. When HECO restores power, you reverse the sequence.
Manual transfer switches are the more affordable option for the equipment plus installation labor. For a windward Kaneohe homeowner with a portable generator, this is the most practical and cost-effective setup.
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
An automatic transfer switch detects a power outage, starts a standby generator automatically, and switches the panel to generator power without any human action. When utility power returns, it switches back and shuts down the generator. This setup requires a standby generator (propane or natural gas-fueled) permanently mounted outside rather than a portable unit. The ATS itself is a significant add to the total system cost.
For Kaneohe specifically: there is no natural gas grid on the windward side of Oahu. Standby generators that run on natural gas are not an option here. Propane-fueled standby generators are the available path if you want automatic backup, which means planning tank size and propane delivery logistics as part of the setup.
Sizing the Generator for Your Household
Oversizing is a common mistake. A 10,000-watt generator costs significantly more to buy, burns more fuel per hour, and is harder to move and store than a 6,500-watt unit. Unless you’re trying to run central AC on generator power, most windward Oahu households don’t need more than 7,500 watts for the loads that matter during an outage.
A reasonable Kaneohe household backup list looks like this:
- Refrigerator / freezer: 150-300 watts running
- Window AC (10,000 BTU): 1,000-1,200 watts running
- Well pump (if applicable): 1,000-1,500 watts running plus surge
- Lighting: 200-400 watts
- Phone/device charging and misc outlets: 200-400 watts
Running total is roughly 2,500-3,800 watts for all of the above simultaneously. A 5,500-watt generator handles this with reasonable margin. The surge capacity matters more than the continuous rating, well pumps and refrigerator compressors pull 3-5 times their running wattage on startup, so the generator needs to handle those peaks without shutting down.
The Generator Inlet Box
Running a generator cord through a window or garage door to reach the panel is the way homeowners start out. It works but it’s inconvenient, creates a pinch point in the cord, and is a trip hazard. A generator inlet box, an exterior-mounted male plug that connects via a short run of conduit to the transfer switch, cleans up the setup considerably. The generator parks in the garage or driveway, the cord plugs into the inlet, and you work the transfer switch inside. Inlet boxes add a small amount to the installation.

Transfer switch installation in Hawaii requires a permit. This is one of the most commonly skipped steps when homeowners have a friend-of-a-friend do the installation. A transfer switch installation that bypasses permitting means the work isn’t inspected, and a homeowner insurance claim related to a generator fire or electrical fault may be denied on the basis that the installation was unpermitted.
