If you own a home in Kaneohe built between roughly 1965 and 1978, there is a reasonable chance it was wired with aluminum branch conductors instead of copper. This is not a fabricated scare story from a contractor trying to sell a rewire. The aluminum wiring issue was widespread in Hawaii and across the mainland during those years because copper prices spiked hard enough that builders switched to aluminum as a cost-saving measure. What that means for you today depends on the specific condition of your home’s wiring and devices.
This post covers what aluminum wiring actually is, why it matters, what the real failure modes look like, and what your options are if your Kaneohe home has it.
Why Aluminum Branch Wiring Became a Problem
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes. Over many heat-cool cycles from normal circuit loading, the wire pulls slightly away from the screw terminals on outlets and switches where it’s connected. That micro-movement creates a high-resistance connection, and a high-resistance connection generates heat. In a wall cavity. With insulation and wood nearby.
The second issue is oxidation. Aluminum oxidizes more readily than copper. The aluminum oxide layer that forms on the surface is itself a poor conductor, which adds to the resistance problem at connection points.
This is not a defect in the wiring runs themselves. A single continuous aluminum conductor carrying power from the panel to a junction box is not inherently dangerous. The risk lives at connection points: device terminals, outlets, switches, splices in junction boxes, and breaker lugs in the panel.
How Common Is It in Kaneohe?
Quite common. Windward Oahu saw a lot of residential construction in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the Ko’olau Pass improved access and Kaneohe grew out from the military housing around MCBH and into neighborhoods like Kahaluu, Heeia, and Ahuimanu. Many of those homes are still original wiring. If your home was built during that window and hasn’t been rewired, aluminum branch wiring is a reasonable assumption until verified.
You can check yourself. Turn off a circuit, pull an outlet from its box, and look at the conductor insulation. Aluminum wire typically has jacket print reading AL or ALUMINUM. A silver-colored conductor (versus the dull copper color of copper wire) is also a clear indicator. If you’re not comfortable pulling outlets, an electrician can do the identification in a few minutes.
What Increases the Risk in Windward Conditions
Kaneohe’s windward humidity and salt mist accelerates oxidation compared to dryer parts of Oahu. Aluminum oxide forms faster in humid coastal conditions. That doesn’t make aluminum wiring uniquely dangerous in Kaneohe, but it does mean connections that might stay adequate for longer on the mainland may degrade faster here. Homes closer to the bay or in low-lying areas with consistent trade wind exposure are more likely to see faster oxidation at connection points.
The Realistic Options
There are three main approaches to aluminum branch wiring, ranging from minimal to comprehensive:
Option 1: CO/ALR Device Replacement
Outlets and switches installed on aluminum wiring should be rated CO/ALR (or AL/CU) rather than standard devices. Standard outlets are not rated for aluminum, and the terminal screw design isn’t right for the material. Replacing every outlet and switch with properly rated CO/ALR devices eliminates the most common failure point without touching the wiring runs. This is the least expensive approach and appropriate for homes where the wiring itself is in otherwise good condition.
Option 2: AlumiConn or COPALUM Connectors
At every connection point where aluminum wiring connects to a device or splices to copper, you can use a listed connector designed to safely join the two metals. COPALUM connectors (crimped by a specialized tool) and AlumiConn connectors (a listed twist-on device) both create a CO-ALR rated junction. This is often used when a homeowner wants the convenience of standard outlet devices but wants the aluminum properly treated at every termination. It requires opening every outlet box, junction box, and switch to install the connectors.
Option 3: Rewire
A full rewire replaces aluminum branch conductors with copper throughout the home. This is the most comprehensive resolution and eliminates the aluminum issue permanently. It’s also the most disruptive and expensive. In most Kaneohe homes from this era, a rewire involves opening walls to pull new wire, patching, and repainting. For a home where the aluminum has been well-maintained and devices are CO/ALR rated, this is often overkill. For a home with visible heat damage at outlets, multiple tripped breakers from failing connections, or where the wiring is otherwise deteriorated, a rewire makes sense.

Aluminum is still commonly used in panel feeders (the large conductors running from the meter to the main breaker) because the gauge is large enough that the expansion-contraction issue at lugs is manageable with proper installation and periodic tightening. Modern panels use aluminum for these service entrance conductors routinely and safely. The branch circuit wiring, the smaller conductors running from breaker to outlet, is where the problems arose with the thinner gauge used in the 1960s-70s construction.
If your panel is from the same era as your home and has never been serviced, it’s worth having an electrician check the lug connections for signs of overheating or oxidation, particularly on the feeder conductors.
