Whole-Home Surge Protection on Oahu

Type 1 and Type 2 surge protectors installed at your panel and key circuits across Aiea, Honolulu, Kailua, and Kaneohe.

Surge Protection

Defend Every Plug from Hawaii’s Storms.

Hawaii gets thunderstorms, salt-corroded utility hardware, and the occasional HECO restoration spike that fries everything plugged in. Power strips with surge protection in them help a little — but the real defense is a whole-home surge protector installed at your main panel where the surge actually enters.

Sparky and Sons installs Type 1 (line-side, ahead of the meter) and Type 2 (load-side, at the panel) surge protective devices. We use Eaton, Square D, Siemens, and Leviton SPDs sized for your panel and rated for Hawaii’s spike profile (high frequency, often during weather).

For sensitive electronics — home theater, networking gear, smart-home hubs — we add a second-stage point-of-use surge protector on the dedicated circuit. Layered protection drops let-through voltage to safe levels for even the most sensitive equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a power strip with surge protection do the same thing?
No — power-strip SPDs are limited and only protect what’s plugged into them. A panel-level SPD protects every circuit at the source.
How long does a surge protector last?
Depends on how many surges it absorbs. Modern SPDs have indicator lights — if it goes from green to red or off, it’s spent and needs replacement.
Will my homeowner’s insurance cover a surge?
Sometimes — but proving causation is hard and most policies have high deductibles. SPDs are cheaper insurance.
Do I need surge protection if I have solar?
Especially if you have solar — inverters are expensive and sensitive. We add SPD on the solar disconnect as a matter of practice.
